I am Lucy and I’m here to guide you through a practice of movements and self-awareness called Pilates with Lucy that is going to change how you feel. Primarily working the Body AND Mind in Harmony to strengthen, lengthen and promote both physical and mental well being.
How do I know this?
Because I’ve been stumbling around on this planet for some 56 years and I haven’t always been into ‘fitness’ or ‘sports’, I can’t tell you how scary walking into a gym for the first time was for me at 30 something. Actually I was late 30’s, a single parent of 2 small boys and I was terrified but ready and willing to give anything a go. I started walking the treadmill, anyone can walk right?! Progressed to group classes and weight training, 6 days a week. I couldn’t get enough of this endorphin hit and Sundays (the day the gym was closed) were my least favourite day of the week. I started bodybuilding and competed successfully for a season in 2002/3 and again in 2009 with my soon to be husband. (4th time lucky ~told you I’d been stumbling around the planet for awhile) After qualifying and competing in the INBA Australian Titles in Melbourne in 2009 I decided to hang up the teeny sparkly bikinis and pack away the ridiculously difficult to walk in platform stage shoes along with the diets and darkest tanning products you have never seen…
I was still training but then I hurt my back and had a slightly bulging L4/5 disc. Hmmmmm, so began rounds of Chiropractor treatments, same thing every week, a little immediate relief that seems to last a day or so or sometimes snapping back out as I got back into my car. So, I found an amazing Osteopath and around the same time started some pilates/yoga type classes at the gym as it was all I could manage. My (by now) husband started a pilates instructor course so I began attending all his classes. My back started to improve and heal….whaaat?!? Fast forward about 5 years and I start thinking, maybe I can do this better and get qualified as an instructor too? I signed up for a course with Studio Pilates and after a year of procrastination and postponing of the face to face component I finally completed Anatomy and Matwork in September 2015….getting up on stage to teach took another few very nervous months.
**pause…are you new to Pilates, to exercise in general? Are you nervous? Fearful? Insecure?
Remember, I was all of those things and more.
I started by accident; a friend saw my recently printed certificate on my desk and asked if I would help her. She had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This was the inspiration I needed. I could practice teaching for a good cause. Soon I was able to teach actual gym classes and when my husband went in for shoulder surgery I took over all his classes. One day a couple of my students approached me and asked if I might run some private classes for them from home at times specific for their needs out of gym hours. I moved furniture and set up a space in our now unused rumpus room (the children had all moved on) Around Sept 2016 we had ripped up the carpet and laid flooring and officially renamed the rumpus room a Pilates Studio! August 2017 I began contracting to Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley to treat guests to Pilates classes in The Spa Lounge. What a privilege to visit this iconic and very special place on a weekly basis and on call for the next several years until the bushfires of Christmas 2019 and the subsequent Covid-19 closed the Resort.
2018 we visited our favourite spot in the Pacific, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu to teach at a friends Island Resort. I mean who doesn’t have a friend who owns a private island??? Who wants to ‘come with’ next time??? 2019 due to bushfires the Resort was evacuated and classes put on hold 2020 Covid-19 again restricted classes at the Resort as well as all face to face classes and Online Zoom classes were introduced as a gift to my existing clients and any new interested clients.
So apart from all that, who am I outside of a pilates instructor?
I’m passionate about our Australian Wildlife and when the fires were finally out I volunteered setting up feed and water stations in my beloved Wolgan Valley. I continue to work as a volunteer for wildlife preservation, care and rescue. We have a resident cat who will often appear for class….or not and I especially love that our new found online classes allow for clients to also have their fur babies or real babies even join us! We can mute the noisy ones!
Pre pilates I worked in many service industries, banking, retail & many many years of hospitality. These days I don’t ‘run’ or lift weights by choice. I love walking my son’s Husky dog and gardening, both my own and others. I started Pilates for the exercise and stayed for the stress relief and well being.
